5 Family New Year's Resolution Ideas

200821-2121x1414-family.jpg

As we approach the second month of 2021, it is important for us as families to come together and set goals that will lead us to a positive and healthy rest of the year. Setting these goals as a family builds motivation and encouragement. Now is a great time to get a kickstart an amazing year! If you’re not quite sure what New Year’s Resolutions to follow this year, we’ve got some great suggestions that can get you on the right track. Here’s 5 Family New Year’s Resolutions you and your family can try out this year:

 1.     Practice gratitude as a family.

After a powerful change in routine in 2020, we have a lot to be grateful for this year. Take the time during your days to acknowledge the things you are thankful for as a family. By the grace of God, we are still alive and well today and we must give thanks for all we have. We must be thankful for our loved ones. Parents, remind your little ones of the importance of gratitude and appreciation.

2.     Keep a record of your good times together.

In the age of media, all of our beautiful memories that we create with our families can be kept right in our back pocket. While it is very important to enjoy and be in the moment during times with our loved ones, it is also nice to have a chance to look back on those moments. It might be fun to create a pictorial family history book to enjoy together. Keep creating those amazing memories together and every now and then snap a picture together to keep a record of it.

3.     Start a new tradition.

It might be fun to try out a new tradition as a family that you have never done before. How about starting a new activity that you can follow every week? Some possible ideas might be: a movie night, going to church every Sunday, starting a game night, or “no devices for a day.” This can be a great way to set aside time to interact and connect with each other. Our schedules can get very busy, so it is important to always make time to share moments with our loved ones.

4.     Find new healthy recipes and prepare them together.

Cooking can be a great and healthy activity to enjoy with your children. Let’s face it, sometimes it’s hard to kick the junk food cravings, but it’s a good time to find some healthy alternatives. Find a new healthy recipe every week and come together as a family to try it out! Try out some homemade pizza, stuffed bell peppers, or a taco night!

5.     Read together

It’s no secret that reading is a healthy mental habit for both adults and children. Unfortunately, studies find that interest in reading diminishes around 4th grade. To boost the desire for knowledge and develop critical thinking skills, it’s a good idea to get at least 15-25 pages of reading done on a typical day. Maybe right before bedtime, sit and read together. It doesn’t even have to be the same book, everyone can each find a corner of the room where they sit and read a book they enjoy.

We hope that these tips for some goals to set this year will help jump-start an amazing year! Keep going, we wish you a safe and happy 2021!
